Irritable bowel does not cause changes in bowel tissue or increase the risk of colon cancer.

Irritable Bowel: Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome vary from person to person. But they usually exist for a long time. The most common are:

  • Abdominal pain, cramping, or bloating associated with bowel movements
  • Changes in bowel movements
  • Change in frequency of bowel movements
  • Inflation
  • Flatulence (increased gas in the intestines)
  • Mucus in stools

Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can be caused by:

  • Food: The role of food allergies or intolerances is not fully understood. A true food allergy rarely causes irritable bowel syndrome. But many people experience worse symptoms when they eat or drink certain foods or beverages, such as wheat, dairy products, citrus fruits, lemons, cabbage, milk, and carbonated beverages.
  • Stress: Most people with irritable bowel syndrome experience worse or more frequent symptoms during periods of increased stress. But while stress can make symptoms worse, it doesn't cause them.

Irritable Bowel: General Tips for Relieving Symptoms:

No specific diet or medication works for everyone with irritable bowel syndrome. But many things can help if you are diagnosed with it.


What to do:

  • Cook home-cooked meals using fresh ingredients whenever you can
  • Keep a diary of what you eat and any symptoms you experience -Try to avoid things that trigger your symptoms
  • Try to find ways to relax
  • Regular physical exercise
  • Try probiotics for a month to see if they help

What not to do:

  • Do not delay or skip meals
  • Do not eat too quickly
  • Do not eat a lot of fatty, spicy, or processed foods
  • Eat no more than 3 servings of fresh fruit a day (a serving of 80 grams)
  • Do not drink more than 3 cups of tea or coffee a day
  • Do not drink too much alcohol or carbonated drinks

Irritable Bowel: How to Reduce Bloating, Cramping, and Gas:

  • Eat oats regularly
  • Eat 1 tablespoon of flaxseed (whole or ground) daily
    Avoid foods that are difficult to digest (such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, lemons, onions, and dried fruits).
  • Avoid products containing sorbitol (sweetener).
  • Ask your pharmacist about medicines that may help, such as buscopan or peppermint oil

  • Reduce high-fiber foods such as whole grains (such as brown bread and brown rice), nuts, and seeds
  • Avoid products containing sorbitol
  • Ask your pharmacist about medications that may help, such as Imodium (loperamide).

Caution: If you have diarrhea, make sure to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

  • Drink plenty of water to soften the stool in your colon
  • Eat more soluble fiber, such as oats, legumes, carrots, peeled potatoes, and flaxseed (whole or ground).
  • Ask your pharmacist about medicines that may help (laxatives).
